Chagall

I'm not too keen on Chagall but here in Nice there is the Musée Marc Chagall so I thought I'd give it a go. It's dedicated to a series of large scale works on a biblical theme & sure enough was all a bit too flowery for me! The building is also yawn-inducing & I ended up drawing in the garden-the most interesting feature. That's the end of me & Chagall. (I do like his auditorium ceiling for the Opera Garnier in Paris however). Bonne weekend!

Quite "iffy", aren't they? I like a lot the gardens of Fondation Maeght, in Saint Paul de Vance. In my time you could buy there the "Dernier Le Mirroir" with Steinberg drawings printed in large size.

Thnx Marcelo & Wolfboy! Oscar, I've been to Founation Maeght-it's very expensive but worth it to see the wonderful gardens & sculpture & listen to the conversations of snooty French art lovers !
I'll post some drawings & photos I made there next-

I know exactly what you mean about Chagall. His last movies have been terrible.Nothing can beat his earlier work including "Above The Law", "Hard to Kill", "Marked For Death" and "Out For Justice".

Hey Matt,

Chagall was working in symbols early in his career a little shell shocked by the Russian revolution- an early and lasting impression on him was my Great Grandfather- Eduard Soermus- a Bolshevik propogandist, friend of Lenin, and famous violinist- he led a failed uprising against tyrannical landowners through a village- and you'll find him popping up time and again in chagall- that said all a bit indistinct for me too- floral and dreamy- but far surpassed by Redon....Hope all is well, Joel
